The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has been recognized as one of the “Best Global Universities for Gastroenterology and Hepatology” by U.S. News and World Report. UNC GI and Hepatology was ranked 6th in the US and 11th globally.
The rankings are based on a number of criteria including reputational indicators, global and regional research reputation, bibliometric indicators, publications, citation impact, total citations, most-cited publications, and scientific excellence indicators.
Each year the UNC GI Division publishes more than 200 unique papers and receives approximately $20 million in external grant support. Members of the Division have published national guidelines in nearly every therapeutic area

At UNC, clinical, basic and translational research is supported by the Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (CGIBD). The CGIBD is one of 19 NIH-supported digestive disease research core centers. The Center, funded since 1985, provides core services, enrichment activities, and administrative support.
